You Don't know Jacques

A Civilian WWII Prisoner of War Tale

and escape from Vittel

A research project into my grandmother, Pamela Moore's life as a governess, POW and Escapee

and, who was Jacques?

At the age of 19, Grandma lost both her parents and traveled to France to work as a governess at a large house in Northern France (The Crosley estate?).

This is where she met the mysterious 'Jacques', who was the young master of the house, to whom she became engaged. (Possibly called Meunier)

In 1940 she was captured whilst in Chartres and interned in Besancon.

She was then taken onward to Vittel. The newspaper article photo shows her on the far left performing in a production in the camp.

She was able to escape, with the help of the French resistance. It's unclear where she then traveled, whether through Vichy or Lyon. We do know she flew back on BOAC 77-A from Lisbon, Portugal to Whitchurch, Bristol in around August 1942.

I'd love to follow her journey, the experiences she had and maybe find what happened to Jacques.
